| I never lived in a Jewish shtetl, but I heard and read about it so often that it inspired me to create the painting City. In this composition, I combined the life of my childhood city, Derbent, with the life in the shtetl that I learned about from my father. It is difficult for me to know which had a greater influence on me. |
